It wasn't until last year that I made a point to thank the "specials" teachers- the teachers for Art, Gym, Music. They don't get enough thanks, I would guess, and with Jack having such a rough year since probably mid 2nd grade, it just seemed all that more important to show my appreciation. Most people don't meet these particular teachers, or get to know them during the course of a year, so their good deeds mostly go unrewarded. Savannah's BFF's parents are very close with the Music teacher, so I'm sure she appreciated my note. The Art teacher really seems to like Savannah, so I know she did as well. The Gym teacher is sort of hard to pin down. Not that he doesn't like my kids or anything, but he doesn't have any real personal interest in my children. (Although I do know that because of Jack's IEP and Behavior Plan, he was more involved than usual).
I decided last week that I would send a note to the Specials teachers again this year. I did it now, partly because I may not see them again. Jack no longer attends, and Savannah graduates this year... so unless there is a reason for me to interact with any of them on campus (and I have little reason to be on campus these days), now is as good a time as any. It's bittersweet. I think they're all nice people, despite some things that may have happened in their classrooms with Jack over the years. I guess it's just a shame things had to end this way, and not when Jack was ready to move on to Middle School.
