Metamorphosis

"To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly".

On Monday night, the middle school had an award ceremony. It was for the most part to reward the kids who were able to maintain the Honor Roll for the first 3 quarters of school. Of course there were things for Math Club, the Science Club, and so on. The Intervention Specialist asked Jack a week or so ago if he would be there for Awards Night, and he said he didn't know what she was talking about. So she emailed me to ask if I'd received an invitation. I did not. (She sent me a photo of it, and it was sent out about a month ago, so somebody really dropped the ball there!).

I knew Jack had been on the Merit Roll a couple of times, and on the Honor Roll at least once. However, when we arrived for Awards Night, I saw the special program for the evening, and no where on this thing was Jack's name. I was worried, as he stood there in line with the other 8th graders, waiting to go out and onto the stage in front of the auditorium. I thought (and even mentioned to him) that perhaps he should just sit with us, and wait til they called him up on the stage, because 1.) I had no idea how the evening was supposed to work;, and 2.) I didn't know if he would even be called on.

Jack was sitting in the very front, and nearly in the middle, of the students up on the stage. As the evening progressed, and as his name had not been called for any of the certificates for those on the honor roll, he slunk further and further down into his chair. (Even if I wanted to motion for him to sit up straight, I was way in the back and he wouldn't have been able to see me). When the awards for each subject were given out, Jack (as well as myself) thought perhaps he would get something from his Spanish teacher- she sent him a really nice letter, and heck- I sure thought he was shoe-in. But his name was not called. At that point, you could see him feel defeat or disappointment. I know I felt it. But not much longer after this, we were all in for a surprise.

One of the final awards of the evening, was The Metamorphosis Award, in honor of a teacher at the school- one who spent several decades of hard work teaching children, before dying of cancer. Her husband has helped give out this particular award, along with the help of a teacher Jack had this year, who was a close friend of theirs. It was truly an amazing feeling. I missed his reaction due to my own, but my husband said that Jack looked very surprised when his name was called. As well, another student fist-bumped him when he sat back down. My understanding is that a number of teachers were crying when they heard he would be getting this award.

Such an amazing way to finish middle school.
